The shower enclosure is one of the most popular items in the bathroom. Although many people now choose to install an enclosure instead of addition to a bath, if you are thinking of selling your home this may not necessarily be the best decision. Many families, especially those with younger children, will look for a bathtub and it may not be wise to exclude this section of the market.

When you are planning a dedicated shower area, make the best possible use of the space you have available. A standard shower enclosure would measure in the region of 800mm square. Although this will give a snug enclosure, the difference it makes to add just another 100mm on each dimension is remarkable. So if you can, plan to squeeze in as much space as possible.

Now, if you are looking for a shower enclosure, then how do you know which style to go for?

Pivot Shower Enclosure with Dagna Concealed Shower Kit, from BathEmpire

Bi-Fold: These dooors are versatile, and can be classed as space saving doors. This is becasue they fold inwards, and require no extra space.

Pivot: Unlike the Bi-Fold which folds in the middle, the Pivot has a hinged door. These ensure a wide opening; as the door opens outwards, ensure you have enough space in the centre of the room.

Sliding: These are an alternative to the Bi-Fold doors, and cater for larger alcoves (up to 1400mm in length).

Quadrant: Another alternative style, these are designed to make the most of the corner of rooms.

If you have an awkward recess to fill, you can consider purchasing a door; for corner enclosures, include a side panel with the door. And don’t forget a tray of the right size.

If you decide to keep your bath, it is worth investing in a dedicated bath shower mixer; the more practical styles available include a thermostatic control. This allows for effective temperature regulation, and can prevent scalding, especially with younger members of the household.

A glass shower screen attached to the side of the bath, instead of a shower curtain, will allow you to make the most of the space available. And it will also avoid the uncomfortable ‘cling’ of a shower curtain.

Are you fed up with tired looking shower curtains? Me too.

In fact, here are 5 things i really hate about shower curtains.

They turn a grimy yellow colour after a few months of use.

If you haven’t trimmed it to fit, it’s quite likely you will end up having to stand on the bottom.

They block out the light from my window.

What are you supposed to do with them when you want to bath ( I used have to drape ours in the basin!)

They stick to you when you’re showering (grrrr, i really hate that)

Obviously, if you have space for a separate shower enclosure, or you’ve taken the bold step of doing away with your bath tub, this isn’t really an issue for you. For the rest of us the options is fitting a bath shower screen.

In a recent article about renovating bathrooms in the The Telegraph, Rose Millard stated:

What else must we do if our bathrooms are to stand out? Firstly, get rid of any children. If they really must share your bathroom, then assign a lidded box for all those scummy toys. Secondly all shower curtains, washing machines and clotheslines must go, too.

What we want from our bathrooms are clean, ordered space where clutter is kept to an absolute minimum. Which simply puts means, shower curtains are no longer welcome!

On the other hand

OK, so shower curtains can be fun. There are some very cool, funky designs available.

UrbanOutfitters.co.uk have an excellent selection of bright, playful designs. But when it comes to selling your house, these really aren’t going to help.

To make this transition easy for you, at BathEmpire we’ve just released our selection of Shower Screens. Available in either 800mm or 1000mm widths these glass screens feature hinges and optional towel rails. They do not turn yellow and they definitely will not stick to you!
