If you've ever bumped your elbows while chopping vegetables, tripped over furniture in the doorway or banged your head on hanging utensils, you'll know just how frustrating it can be to have a cramped or confined kitchen.

Therefore, whether you spend your evenings socialising and preparing gourmet meals in your kitchen or if you just use it to whip up a quick snack now and then, it pays to take steps to maximise the space that you have.

In an ideal world, homeowners would be able to add an extension or knock down walls to create an open-plan kitchen to create extra space, but in the current economic climate when we're all watching the pennies, this is often not a practical option.

However, householders need not despair as with a few simple steps they can quickly free up extra space in their kitchen without breaking the bank.

According to Neil Clark, sales and marketing director at Carron Phoenix, one of the best ways to make the most of limited space is to pay attention to smaller features such as kitchen taps and sinks.

"When space is at a premium, choose a sink with accessories such as a chopping board, drainer basket and strainer tray," he advises.

"This is because you can perform a range of tasks for preparation, rinsing and drying over the sink area, while leaving valuable worktop space clear. A double bowl style is ideal because it maximises the efficiency and user-friendliness of the sink."

Light is also key when trying to create a spacious, airy feel to a room so ensure that your interior is well-lit, either by natural or artificial lighting. Blinds tend to take up less room that curtains so consider updating your furnishing and stick to cool, fresh colours that reflect rather than absorb the light.

Finally, you'll be surprised at the difference a simple de-clutter can make. So whip out the bin bags and fire up the vacuum cleaner for a good old tidy and clear out to help free up space and create a fresh, spacious feel.
