Family-Friendly Bathrooms that Kids Love

Bathroom Planning, Choose Your Style, Renovation, Technical Team

You might love minimalist, grown-up bathrooms, but if you have a family, then the type of bathroom you choose may have to be more practical.

That’s not to say it can’t be gorgeous and stylish, however you just have to consider the way the bathroom will be used. For example, if you have children who have lots of bathtime toys and toiletries, then you’ll want somewhere they can be stored away neatly when not in use.

Under-sink storage is a great idea because you’re using up what would otherwise be wasted space. By putting the toys at a low level, your children will be able to get them out and put them away themselves.

That said, children tend to be wonderful at the former and dreadful at the latter!

You will also want wall-mounted storage so you can keep your own cosmetics and anything dangerous like medicines or razors out of the reach of little ones.

Although you may be tempted to opt for a bright colour when trying to make a bathroom child-friendly, white or wooden finishes are best, as you’ll be able to change the colour scheme whenever you like by simply changing the towels or wall colouring.

A great way to introduce fun, but in a stylish way, is with circular ‘stepping-stone’ bath mats – perhaps in a range of bright colours.

Family bathrooms work best when each member of the family can use everything independently (as long as they’re not too young).

Buy a cheap non-slip bathroom step so they can get up to use the sink without needing your help.

When it comes to toys, some will just make your bathroom look messy, while others will give it a retro, cool appeal – I’m talking about the iconic rubber duck of course.

Some retailers offer these for sale, but at BathEmpire you get one for free with every order!

You can also add fun touches with the towels or shower curtain – either opting for bright clashing colours, or a pattern that children will love. We’d steer clear of cartoon characters though – funky patterns are best!

In all your choices you have to think about how you and your family are actually going to use the room.

By choosing hand-held shower heads, for example, you can make it easier for you to shower down your children after they’ve been playing sport or just rolling in the mud! Another consideration is the sink.

Wall-mounted sinks are a good option, because their position can be raised as your children grow taller.

And last but not least, something that every family bathroom needs is an enormous linen basket for used towels and discarded clothes – it’ll make your life much easier and cut down on mess, you’ll see.
